Fast, Non-Destructive Elemental Analysis in the Field

The HGX-8 Series is a range of handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometers designed for fast, non-destructive and reliable elemental analysis. With a lightweight, ergonomic design and powerful digital processing, the HGX-8 Series provides rapid results for applications including mineral exploration, metals identification and soil heavy-metal analysis.

Three application-specific models are available:

  • HGX-8 Ore Analyzer – for ores, rocks, mineral powders, cores, slag and mining materials.
  • HGX-8 Alloy Analyzer – for rapid identification and analysis of metals and alloys.
  • HGX-8 Soil Heavy Metal Detector – for elemental analysis of soil, sludge and sediment.

Each model combines a high-resolution SDD detector, programmable X-ray source, advanced digital signal processing and dedicated analytical software to provide accurate elemental analysis directly at the point of measurement.

Key Features & Benefits

Fast, Accurate Analysis

The HGX-8 Series uses a high-performance Fast-SDD detector with energy resolution of up to 125 eV, combined with a high signal-to-noise 4096-channel digital pulse processor. This enables rapid detection and reliable elemental analysis.

Wide Elemental Range

The system can analyse elements from Magnesium (Mg) through to Uranium (U), with a reported concentration range of 0.0001% to 99.99%, depending on the element, sample and application.

Application-Specific Software

Dedicated analytical software is provided for each model, including:

  • Ore analysis
  • Alloy analysis
  • Soil heavy-metal analysis
  • Specialised NDT alloy analysis

Portable & Ergonomic

Weighing approximately 1.5 kg including the battery, the HGX-8 is designed for comfortable handheld operation and field use. Its narrow measurement head allows access to corners, confined areas and narrow spaces.

High-Performance Processing

An industrial-grade quad-core 1.8 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM and 24 GB internal storage provide fast processing and storage of approximately 300,000 spectral datasets. Storage can be expanded to up to 128 GB.

Built for Continuous Operation

The HGX-8 incorporates a hot-swappable battery system, allowing batteries to be changed without shutting down the instrument. A single battery provides approximately 8–10 hours of operation, depending on usage conditions.

Advanced Connectivity

Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enable data sharing and remote operation using a PC or Android device. The instrument can also connect to a portable Bluetooth printer for convenient reporting.

Integrated Cameras

A high-definition sample camera assists with sample positioning and documentation. An optional environmental camera provides additional imaging capability for recording the measurement location and sample.

Automatic Sample Detection & Safety

An infrared sensor detects the presence of a sample and helps prevent X-ray excitation when the instrument is not correctly positioned. Multi-interface visual and audible warnings provide real-time indication of X-ray status and instrument conditions.

Air Pressure Compensation

A built-in air-pressure compensation system allows the software to correct analytical results according to atmospheric pressure, helping maintain measurement consistency under varying environmental conditions.

HGX-8 Ore Analyzer

The HGX-8 Ore Analyzer is designed for rapid elemental analysis of geological and mining materials, providing a portable alternative to laboratory-based analysis for many field applications.

Suitable for:

  • Raw ore
  • Rock and drill cores
  • Mineral powders
  • Mining soils
  • Slag
  • Geological samples
  • Mineral exploration and resource assessment

The dedicated ore analysis software enables rapid identification and quantification of elements, helping geologists, mining professionals and laboratories make informed decisions directly in the field.

HGX-8 Alloy Analyzer

The HGX-8 Alloy Analyzer is designed for fast, non-destructive identification and analysis of metals and alloys. It can assist with material verification, sorting and identification across a broad range of industrial applications.

Suitable for:

  • Aluminium alloys
  • Stainless steels
  • Alloy steels
  • Tool steels
  • Chromium-molybdenum steels
  • Copper alloys
  • Zinc alloys
  • Cobalt alloys
  • Precious metals
  • Other metal and alloy materials

The HGX-8 Alloy Analyzer is particularly suited to applications where rapid material identification is required without cutting, damaging or removing the component from service.

HGX-8 Soil Heavy Metal Detector

The HGX-8 Soil Heavy Metal Detector provides rapid elemental analysis of soil and other environmental materials, making it suitable for field screening and investigation.

Suitable for:

  • Soil
  • Sludge
  • Sediment
  • Environmental investigations
  • Heavy-metal screening
  • Contaminated site assessment
  • Agricultural and geological applications

Dedicated soil heavy-metal analysis software provides rapid results to assist with field assessment and decision-making.
