Ray-Ran Unrestrained Linear Thermal Shrinkage Apparatus (Liquid Immersion Method)

Accurate Thermal Shrinkage Testing for Plastic Films and Sheeting

The Ray-Ran Unrestrained Linear Thermal Shrinkage Apparatus is designed to determine the unrestrained linear thermal shrinkage of plastic films and sheeting using the liquid immersion method. Ideal for quality control, product development and research laboratories, the instrument provides accurate, repeatable results in accordance with ASTM D2732.

During the manufacturing process, plastic films and sheets can retain internal stresses. When exposed to heat, these stresses are released, causing the material to shrink. This apparatus accurately measures the percentage of shrinkage at controlled temperatures, enabling manufacturers to evaluate product performance, processing conditions and material consistency.

Engineered for precision and ease of use, the system combines a digitally controlled heated liquid bath, integrated stirring system and electronic timer to ensure stable, repeatable testing conditions.

How It Works

The temperature bath is heated to the required test temperature before prepared film specimens are immersed in the liquid bath for a specified period. After immersion, the samples are cooled to room temperature and measured in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. The percentage of thermal shrinkage is then calculated and can be plotted against temperature to evaluate material behaviour.

The apparatus is supplied with stainless steel specimen holders designed for 100 mm × 100 mm samples, together with a matching cutting template to ensure consistent specimen preparation.
