Melt Flow Index Tester (MFR/MVR Tester)

Overview

The Melt Flow Index Tester is designed to accurately determine the Melt Mass Flow Rate (MFR) and Melt Volume Flow Rate (MVR) of thermoplastic materials. During testing, molten polymers are extruded through a standard die under precisely controlled temperature and load conditions. The instrument measures the rate of flow (in grams or cubic centimetres per 10 minutes), providing a reliable indication of the material’s viscosity and flow characteristics.

This equipment is suitable for testing a wide range of polymers — from high-temperature engineering plastics such as polycarbonate (PC), polysulfone (PSU), fluoropolymers, and nylon (PA) — to low-temperature thermoplastics including polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), ABS resin, and polyoxymethylene (POM).

The instrument is widely used in plastics manufacturing, petrochemical industries, quality inspection laboratories, research institutions, and universities for routine material evaluation and quality control.

Applicable Test Standards

  • GB/T 3682-2018: Determination of melt flow rate and melt volume flow rate for thermoplastics

  • ISO 1133:1997: Determination of MFR and MVR for thermoplastics

  • ASTM D1238: Standard test method for flow rate of thermoplastic melts using extrusion plastometers

Key Features & Advantages

  1. High-Temperature Durability

    • The heating barrel is manufactured from 304 stainless steel or high-strength alloy, ensuring resistance to oxidation and corrosion during long-term testing at elevated temperatures (up to 400–500 °C).

  2. Precision Temperature Control

    • Dual temperature sensors deliver accurate thermal regulation and superior temperature uniformity, improving measurement stability and extending service life.

  3. Automatic Countdown Function

    • Built-in four-minute feed countdown function in compliance with national standards enhances repeatability and consistency between tests.

  4. Data Connectivity

    • Optional RS232 interface enables direct connection to a computer for data export and analysis.

  5. User-Friendly Operation

    • The instrument automatically recalls the previous test conditions after startup, reducing setup time and operator workload.

  6. High-Temperature Capability

    • Maximum operating temperature up to 450–500 °C (optional configuration; specify when ordering).

  7. Corrosion Resistance

    • Proven performance and measurement stability even after prolonged exposure to highly corrosive polymers, such as fluorinated plastics.

  8. Compliance

    • Fully compliant with ISO 1133, ASTM D1238, and GB/T 3682 international standards.

  9. Advanced Temperature Control Algorithm

    • Incorporates a fuzzy PID control system for fast response and high sampling accuracy, ensuring precise and stable temperature control.
