The Somerville Type Classifier is a specialised tool for the paper industry, designed to ensure that no valuable fibres are lost among uncooked materials and impurities in pulp stocks. Originally intended for identifying impurities in comminuted pulps, this versatile classifier can be used with all mechanical and chemical pulps. It's also widely employed to detect stickies that remain from recycled materials.
Thick fibres can create issues in the press section of paper machines and during the drying process. The Somerville Type Classifier is designed in line with the Pulp Evaluation Committee's second report to the Technical Section of the Paper Manufacturers Association and meets TAPPI 275 standards.
Functionality
The primary function of the Somerville Type Classifier is to separate contaminants such as stubble, impurities, macro stickies, plastics, metal fragments and flakes of recycled fiber from pulp fibres for detailed examination and quantification. Particles larger than 0.15 mm are retained by the grid. After the water spraying cycle, these impurities are collected, dried and weighed, allowing for the calculation of the impurity percentage in the pulp.

Versatile Testing Options
Optional Accessory: Flat sieve with round holes (2 mm or 3 mm) for the Somerville Fractionator. This optional sieve can convert the classifier into flat sieve equipment, ideal for sieving cooked pulp and measuring knots. Please contact us for a revised quote if you are interested in this accessory.
