Advanced Density Gradient Apparatus for Accurate Polymer and Material Density Testing
The Ray-Ran Auto Density Measurement System is an advanced density gradient apparatus designed to accurately determine the density of small solid specimens using the gradient column method.
Recognised as a benchmark solution for high-precision density measurement, the system delivers fast, repeatable results for plastics, polymers, elastomers, films, resins and other solid materials. With automatic density calculation, integrated temperature control and advanced data analysis capabilities, it is ideal for quality control, research and development laboratories, production environments and educational institutions.
High-Accuracy Density Measurement
Using the density gradient column technique, the Ray-Ran Auto Density Measurement System determines specimen density by measuring the equilibrium position of a sample within a calibrated density gradient column.
The integrated microprocessor system automatically calculates density values and displays results directly on the LCD screen, eliminating the need for manual calculations or complex graphical interpretation.
The system provides accurate density measurements with high repeatability, supporting material identification, quality verification and process optimisation.
Gradient Column Method Explained
The density gradient column method uses a specially prepared liquid column where density gradually increases from the top to the bottom.
Calibrated glass marker floats with known densities are introduced into the column and settle at positions where their density matches the surrounding liquid. These reference points establish the density gradient.
Test specimens are then placed into the column and, once equilibrium is reached, their position is measured using the integrated optical microscope system. The specimen density is automatically calculated based on its position within the calibrated gradient.
Automatic Operation and Temperature Control
Designed for ease of use, the Ray-Ran Auto Density Measurement System features integrated digital temperature control to maintain column temperature at 23°C ±0.1°C, ensuring stable and repeatable testing conditions.
For laboratories operating in higher ambient temperatures, an integrated cooling coil can be connected to an optional water chiller system to maintain accurate temperature control.
An optional microprocessor-controlled water flow valve provides even greater temperature stability.
Efficient Testing and Data Management
Available in 3-column and 6-column configurations, the system enables multiple specimens to be tested efficiently.
The built-in microprocessor provides:
- Automatic density calculation
- Automatic calibration
- Sample measurement recording
- Operator and material data storage
- Batch statistics calculation
Results can be transferred to the supplied Ray-Ran Techni-Test software, where data can be displayed in graphical and tabular formats for detailed analysis and reporting.
Precision Calibration and Measurement
A linear encoder and optical microscope system are used to accurately calibrate the density gradient using reference marker floats.
The automatic sweep mechanism simplifies removal of samples and floats after testing, improving laboratory efficiency and reducing operator handling.
