Customer Story: Hylec Controls Restores Xcalibre T1 Core Drilling Trailer

Challenge:
An Xcalibre T1 core drilling trailer was experiencing persistent issues with its control manifold and drilling mast operation. The mast exhibited excessive friction mid-stroke, pressure spikes to 30 Bar in the down direction, and stalling conditions during retraction. Upon inspection, Hylec Controls identified a design revision in the control manifold, which now featured a single tank port instead of the original two. Additionally, signs of excessive wear inside the guide columns suggested potential misalignment.
Solution:
Hylec Controls installed a new control manifold and reconfigured the plumbing by merging the two tank hoses into a tee fitting. This adjustment improved pressure control, increasing it to 40 Bar for the raising and lowering functions. However, the stalling issue remained, leading to further investigation.
Implementation:
Upon thorough examination, Hylec Controls determined that the two 47mm diameter hollow guide columns were slightly bent, causing misalignment and increased friction. To address this, the team replaced both guide columns along with the bearings on the cross-head at four positions. Following installation, they conducted extensive testing to ensure smooth operation and optimal performance.
Outcome:
With the new components in place and the system thoroughly tested, the Xcalibre T1 core drilling trailer was restored to full functionality. The drilling mast now operates without friction-related issues, and the pressure control is stable. Hylec Controls’ expertise in diagnostics, installation, and testing ensured a successful resolution, minimising downtime and enhancing the trailer’s efficiency.
